The Vibe: One Year Later …

The February “Open-Mic” night not only commemorated the one year anniversary of the Vibe series, but featured an array of talented individuals from multiple generations and genres of music. Whether it was the debut of the Yodeling Elvis or the ever-incredible guitar work of Paul Strayfer, the Vibe had something for everyone.

With her family in attendance, host Rev. White Chocolate introduced the 83 year young Grace, who shared her childhood story of sporadic deafness and having to suffer the ridicule of her own mother and friends. She even became married just to leave her troubled home and began drinking to numb her feelings of worthlessness. However, decades later, she credits her personal faith from up above for getting her through the dark times and making her feel at her youngest to date.

The hip-hop generation took over as Steve was also able to spit piercing lyrics about overcoming horrific trials and tribulations, the returning Vibez embraced his bone-bashing krump & flex dancing skills, and newcomer Dave Noodlez spewed his woes of heartache.

The wondrous poets of the area impressed and inspired as Brooklynite Yanick read a poem about a former hot Latino boy, Tom read three poems about John Rocker, Tibet, and the usually misquoted Jesus, Jen debuted her stirring new poem “Cold,” and Adrianna courageously shared her heart even in the midst of a personal struggle. Our prayers are always with you, the community, beyond the four walls of the “Muddy Cup!”

The brilliant piano-playing of Gui was later soothing to the soul, and just like Rev. White Chocolate noted about his good friend, the French really do contribute beyond the French fry realm! :)

The night was capped off on a powerful note, with Lawrence blasting current day worldly issues through his acclaimed “75 Degrees in December.” Look for a future event with Lawrence as a main feature and stay tuned for info about the next Vibe! Here’s to another year and counting … Thank you all from everyone in and out of the V-I-B-E!
